After taking a break in 2011 from selling birds we are pleased to announce from February 2012 Merrydale Poultry will be again selling Point of Lay Hybrid Hens. We would like to thank all our previous customers who have contacted us expressing a wish to purchase hens from us again, due to what seems to be an increasing market of unvaccinated and generally unhealthy hens being sold

All hens are individually penned to enable you to see and pick out the exact hen you would like to take home

Merrydale will be run by Jo Negus, a poultry keeper herself with experience with hatching and rearing hens.

How we started:

My name is Karen and what started as me buying some POL hybrid hens for myself a quite a few years ago for "just a few eggs", has now become Merrydale Poultry. Little did I realise how addictIve keeping poultry could be !! Keeping hens is fast becoming one of the UK's most popular pastimes.

There is nothing like going down the garden to the chicken coop and collecting a few eggs for breakfast, I promise you, once you have tasted a proper fresh egg you will never buy shop eggs again. More importantly there is peace of mind as to where and how your egg has arrived on you plate. No more buying shop eggs that have come from inhumanly kept hens in pitifully small cages, did you know that, at present, legislation says that a hybrid hen can be kept in a cage 550cm² ? Thats less than the size of an A4 sheet of paper. This has now changed to 750cm² from 1st January 2012.

Keeping hens can also be a great way for kids to learn about looking after animals, chickens can also be very amusing to watch, (I often find myself sitting down in the paddock with a cup of tea and realise i have been watching them for a hour !!!), feed costs are minimal they also like your scrap veggies the more greens the more yellow the yolk,(see our chicken care page for further information)

We can promise at merrydale that only FULLY VACCINATED and REGULARY WORMED hens will be sold, we DO NOT sell hens that are any younger than 16 weeks old, this allows the young hens to be fully vaccinated and ready and hardy enough to go straight outside. Our hens will NOT be Sneezing, Coughing or have Runny Noses. VIEW OUR VACCINATION PROGRAMME

Also we will only sell hens from February to October, due to our years of experience we feel that young pullets (hens) do not thrive well in cold damp conditions along with short daylight hours.
