A Little about us:
My name is Karen and what started as me buying some POL hybrid hens
for myself a few years ago for "just
a few eggs", has now become Merrydale Poultry. Little did I
realise how addictIve keeping poultry could be !! Keeping hens is
fast becoming one of the UK's most popular pastimes.
There is nothing like going down the garden to the chicken coop
and collecting a few eggs for breakfast, I promise you, once you
have tasted a proper fresh egg you will never buy shop eggs again.
More importantly there is peace of mind as to where and how your
egg has arrived on you plate. No more buying shop eggs that have
come from inhumanly kept hens in pitifully small cages, did you know
that, at present, legislation says that a hybrid hen can be kept
in a cage 550cm² ? Thats less than the size of an A4 sheet of
paper.
Keeping hens can also be a great way for kids to learn about looking
after animals, chickens can be very amusing to watch, ( i often find
myself sitting down in the paddock with a cup of tea and realise
i have been watching them for a hour !!!), feed costs are minimal
they also like your scrap veggies the more greens the more yellow
the yolk,(see our chicken care page for further information)
We keep several breeds of poultry, pure breeds and hybrid hens,
which are available as day old chicks, growers and POL 15 wks+. We
also have hatching eggs which are available for collection here at
Merrydale Farm or by post.
